Efficient Commercial Washing Machines

To be eligible for inclusion on the Water Technology List the equipment must meet the following definition:

Efficient commercial washing machines eligible for the ECA and inclusion on the WTL must be a horizontal axis washing machine with an energy and wash performance equivalent to the European Energy Label rating of AA for energy consumption* and wash performance** respectively. The machine must also not exceed a maximum water consumption of 12 l/kg wash load***.

* The equivalent to a European Energy Label rating of A for energy consumption is set out in Statutory Instrument 1996 No. 600 (The Energy Information (Washing Machines) Regulations 1996) aslte0.19kWh per kg wash load measured using the standard test for horizontal axis machines (Standard 60°C cotton cycle) as set out by BS EN 60456:2005, section 11.

** The equivalent to a European Energy Label rating of A for washing performance is set out in Statutory Instrument 1996 No. 600 (The Energy Information (Washing Machines) Regulations 1996) as P>1.03, where P is the ratio defined and measured using BS EN 60456:2005, section 8.

***The maximum water consumption is taken as the average of the values recorded using the standard test for horizontal axis machines  (Standard 60°C cotton cycle) as set out by BS EN 60456:2005, section 11, for the Energy Label nominated cycle and the cycle with the greatest water consumption.

Manufacturers should apply to Defra with evidence that their products meet these criteria in order to appear on the Water Technology List.
